Linux users that are interested in protecting their privacy and anonymity are in good company. Tails, the Amnesic Incognito Live System based on Debian Linux, released version .11 on April 26th. This new version was packed with updates and improvements that everyone is sure to love.

The release includes many updates, and the release notes / change logs can be found here for the non technical , and here for a more in-depth explanation. Here are some highlights.

Setting a sudo password. Unlike earlier Tails releases, full sudo access via an empty password is not available any more. In fact, full sudo access is disabled per default

Not granting the desktop user root access by default.

Search plugin Scroogle was removed. RIP scroogle.

iceweasel, the Firefox port, 10.0.4esr-1 was installed.

The Debian provided Duck Duck Go search plugin was replaced with the SSL version. DDG is an awesome search engine. If you’ve never used it I would highly recommend it.

Hot around the net everyone is talking about the Ubuntu Developer Summit and who’s rumored to attend. EA games.

Ubuntu’s Jono Bacon tweeted about it and OMGUbuntu’s Joey Sneddon posted an article up today about the news. While there are some great games already on Ubuntu, one of the draw backs is no large distributors of popular gaming titles. This may be the turning point.

The Summit is a five day event for developers and contributors of Ubuntu that is held in Oakland. The summit runs from May 7th – 11th. We will just have to wait to hear what this all actually means. Its very exciting however.

What do you think? Maybe we will be able to purchase Medal of Honor or the new Command and Conquer Generals 2 on the Ubuntu Software Center when its released!

Unfortunately the House Of Representatives passed CISPA (The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act ), a bill that will allow company’s to bypass privacy law and pass along personal data to the government. The measure was approved by a 248 – 168 vote. Following in trend this bill was labeled as protecting “National/cyber Security”, however in my and many other opposing opinions this bill overreaches and gives to much power to big brother. The fight continues and heads for the Senate. Stay tuned for updates.

Interested in reading the CISPA bill? It can be found here.
