    soph·ism [ sóf ìzzəm ] (plural soph·isms)

    Definition:

apparently clever but flawed argument: an argument or explanation that seems very clever or subtle on the surface but is actually flawed, misleading, or intended to deceive

[14th century. Via French and Latin< Greek sophisma "acquired skill, clever device" < sophos "skilled in a craft , clever, wise"]

Name of the group/society is misleading.

The original Sophists acquired the definition you reference @Amer due to there ability to outsmart the average joe. Knowledge equals power. literary and rhetorical skills proved to be of great importance and the system of debate can seem “argumentative” or even “deceptive”. The Sophists stood for free thought and education, and were so good that even Socrates sent his students to study under the sophists.
